Potty Training Your Puppy During Cold Weather
"Our Furry Friends Need To Be Warm Also"

It can sometimes be enough of a challenge potty training your puppy but you can face even more challenges when it is cold outside.

Your puppy can face many dangers just due to the cold weather so you need to be aware of these. Make sure your puppy does not get around and ingest anti-freeze. Anti-freeze even in small quantities can cause death. So when you are potty training your puppy make sure he does not eat or drink any foreign substance while you have him outside to do his business.

When you have your puppy out for a potty break if your puppy is the short hair variety it may be a good idea to put a coat on them. Young puppies and even dogs if exposed to cold weather for too long can suffer some ill health. While potty training your puppy if you notice that he is shivering take him in to warm him up. Do not take him off his leash. When he has warmed up take him back out to see if he will go potty. Repeat until he does his business.

Another hazard of winter is the salt and chemicals used on the roads to melt ice. Try to avoid these when you are walking your dog in the winter. Some chemicals can actually burn your puppy’s feet. Make sure you wash off your puppy’s paws when you get home. You can buy products to put on their paws that will protect them from the salt and chemicals.

If we for some reason you are going to be out in the cold for a long period of time you should not have a metal type collar on our puppy. The metal in the collar attracts the cold and can actually burn your puppy’s neck.

Remember to take the extra precautions in the winter while you are potty training your puppy.
