Dog Breeds

There are many different breeds of dogs.  There are various authorities for classifying these dogs into groups.  One such authority is the American Kennel Club.  According to the AKC there are over 300 different breeds of dogs and they break these down to 7 groups.

Those seven groups are Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting, Herding and Miscellaneous.  The dogs are placed in groups according to the tasks that they were oringinal bred for.  These tasks can include such things as hunting, guarding and herding.

If you are looking for a purebred puppy you should look for a good breeder.  Stay away from the back yard breeders.  A good breeder is in it for the good of the breed others are in it for the money.
There are also many rescue clubs that are breed specific.  That may be a great way to get the dog you want.

Whether you are getting a purebred or a mixed breed just make sure you really and truly want a dog and that you are prepared for the upcoming challenges.  They are a lifetime committment not a throwaway object.

It may take awhile to get through all the breeds but we should start somewhere so we can start with the beagle.
